From the Short story "Far North" by John Balzar (p228).
"But those things will mend, all except for the empty yearning I cannot satisfy--for those far-off friends, the exhilaration of the cold, the howls of dogs, the elegant simplicity of woodstoves and log cabins, the easy evenings with the storytellers, the phosphorescent dance of colors in a cobalt-black sky, and the long trails into the wild."
And: (Later in the author's life)
"I frostnipped my fingertips and face trying to roll a cigarette in the wind, but the astronaut's prayer-- or perhaps just the savvy of the dogs themselves--- got me exactly where I wanted to go: the middle of nowhere."
